Charles
Stephen Deeprose
Born: 31 December 1858, Ninfield, Sussex, England
In the 1881 Census; for the household of Maria MacDonald Grocer and Draper,
Charles S Deeprose was listed as a Shop man, male 23 years old at Wadhurst, Sussex, England.
He immigrated to Canada in July 1882, settling in Peterboro. Charles entered into studies at McGill
University Theological College. He graduated as a gold medalist and was called to Dominion
Methodist Church as an assistant pastor. Taken from Auntie Edna and Auntie Fran's
memoirs.
Married: 15 August 1889 to Mary Jane Boorman; Wesleyan Chapel, Wadhurst,
Sussex, England. Charles returned to Wadhurst from Canada, to marry Mary Jane Boorman.
Charles returned to Canada with his Bride in September 1889. They settled in Ottawa, Ontario.

Mary
Jane Boorman:
Born: 11 December 1860, Wadhurst, Sussex, England. In the 1881
Census for England, Mary Ann (Jane) is listed as age 20. She is recorded as a dressmaker. In
1871 Mary Jane is pictured in a family photo at Newham’s farm. See
Silver Wedding Anniversary below.

Mary Jane was a Sunday school teacher for many years in
Wadhurst.
In honour of her marriage this silver tea pot was presented to her for
her years
of faithful service. This tea pot is part of June Woodend’s
collection.

Charles, Stanley and Mary Jane Deeprose
This picture was taken about 1890-91.
Stanley Melanchon
was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on July 8, 1890.
Charles was the assistant curate at the
Dominion Methodist Church in Ottawa, Ontario.

Olivia Maryanne was born in Sawyerville, Quebec on the 13 of December 1882.

This picture of Charles and Mary Jane was taken in 1896. Fredrick

Deeprose (the baby) was born 25 November 1895 in Richmond, Quebec.
Standing behind Charles is Edward, Olivia is sitting on his knee and
Stanley is standing beside her.
Mary Jane and Fred, this picture would have been taken at the same
time as the
one above. Note the shape of the sleeves on Mary Jane’s dress and the embroidery
on the bottom of Fred’s outfit. The original copy of this picture is part of
David
Charles Deeprose’s collection. Nigel Masters brought this copy to
Ottawa when he visited us in
October 2004.
In 1903 Charles and Mary Jane’s family was complete.

Mary Jane and Charles lived in this manse in Huntington, Quebec with
their family.

Edna, Frances, and Olivia, the three daughters of Charles Stephen and
Mary Jane Deeprose. This was always my favourite pictures of the
Aunties.
The three girls settled in the Ottawa area. Olivia married Bernard
J Woodruff,
Edna married Albert Victor Woodruff (Bernie's brother), and Frances
married
Wilmot Gilchrist.
In 1910, Reverend Charles Deeprose attended the General Conference in
Victoria, B. C. This photograph was taken at the conference along with
another
showing the presidents of the Conferences of Canadian Methodist
Church. Charles served as

Reverend
Charles Deeprose. About 1919, Charles developed diabetes retired
in June 1920, due to his illness. He was the minister at
Fairmont Methodist
Church, Hutchinson Street, Montreal. After he retired Mary Jane and Charles
went to stay at the cottage on Danford Lake.
Charles and Charlie Dore built the present cottage
at Danford.
Charles died on September 27, 1920.

Mary
Jane Deeprose is standing in front of one of the churches Charles
ministered at. This could be the Fairmont Methodist Church in
Montreal.

Mary Jane Deeprose at the cottage in Danford Lake, Quebec. After,
Charles died,
Mary Jane, Edna and Fran continued to visit Danford Lake in September.
During
the summer months the cottage was rented out for $40.00 a month.

Olivia Maryann Deeprose Woodruff with Katherine and her mother Mary

Deeprose. Aunt Kaye was born July 1, 1920, Ottawa, Ontario.
Mary Jane died
February 25, 1933.

The lure of farm land led the boys westward to homestead in Morrin,
Alberta in 1909 along
with their Uncle George Deeprose (Rev Charles's brother) and his family.
